Growing a Brighter Tomorrow in Gulfton

Commemorative Ceremony on Saturday, May 26, 2018; at 11:00 am, immediately followed by a Mini Fair from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, the City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods (DON) Mayor’s Citizens’ Assistance Office will partner with UP Art Studio, Houston Police Department, Police and Clergy Team, Gulfton Super Neighborhood Council #27 and the The Salvation Army USA, to proudly unveil the creation of a community based mural professionally painted by artistRahmaan Statik of Chicago, who has nearly 20 years of experience painting murals with community engagement.

The groundbreaking event will commemorate the completion of the communal mural on May 26, 2018, following UP Art Studio’s successful accomplishment of securing two grants for the realization of this project. Grants were received from the #PlayEverywhere challenge by Target +KaBOOM! of $20,000 along with an APG grant from the Houston Arts Alliance of $10,000 via UP Art Studio’s fiscal sponsorship relationship with Fresh Arts. Other sponsors and supporters instrumental in this project include: Hotel YlemJerry's Artarama Retail StoresAkzoNobel, and Rich Rodriguez

The completion of this community-based mural has enthusiastically engaged many in the community, including the Art Teacher, Ms. Rosio Padilla at Braeburn Elementary School and included her students in the creation of the mural’s design. The artist will be merging various media styles including spray paint, acrylics, and gessoed cloth in creating his platform with inspiration for all to positively reflect upon as a community. This #Gulfton community is one of Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Complete Communities Initiatives Programs.

The scope of the project includes two additional murals, as well as a creative sidewalk. These artists are: Gelson Danilo Lemus AKA w3r3on3, a Guatemalan-born Houston resident street artist who is a well known for his distinctive style, and Daniel Bombardier AKA Denial, an internationally-recognized pop artist who will paint a colorful mural for the Gulfton community.

We would graciously be honored by your presence at this event. The generated excitement from these works of art throughout the community will artistically resonate with the creativity and beauty it will embrace.
