Houston, TX, 2019

Funding: Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum, City of Houston District K

Major Partners: CITY OF HOUSTON, PARKS BOARD, HARRIS COUNTY, 2019; In-kind Sponsorship from Akzo Nobel.

Project Summary: In honor of the late-Council Member Larry Green, a mural along Sims Bayou was dedicated in May 2019, on his 54th birthday. Council Member Green saw an opportunity to provide a level of cultural excellence for his community along the newly opened trail in his District.

After his passing, Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum and UP Art Studio joined forces to create this work of art. We worked together with City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Houston Parks Board, and Harris County Flood Control, to create the new mural (totaling 2,200 SF) on the façade of three retaining walls along Sims Bayou in the Five Corners neighborhood of Hiram Clarke in southwest Houston.

Two designs, which reflected the surrounding environment, were created and stakeholders from the community voted on their favorite design at in-person meetings and via an online vote.

This mural, which was painted by local artist Gelson D. Lemus aka w3r3on3, provides beautification, enhancement, and community pride to the concrete retaining walls along the section of Sims Bayou at Croquet Ln.
